For over 40 years, The Char has consistently provided a unique fine dining experience. Voted "Best Restaurant in West Virginia" in a State Journal readers poll, The Char consistently offers the finest cuts of meat, the freshest seafood, a premium wine list, and delicious homemade desserts. Nestled in a woodland setting beside a pond on Dry Hill Road, The Char provides a truly elegant and relaxed environment to enjoy a exceptional meal.

Our history began in April 1965 when Ann Lorenz and her son Billy Browskey opened the original Char restaurant in downtown Beckley. Serving fresh steaks and seafood and our famous desserts, The Char quickly became a favorite spot for local patrons and a destination for West Virginians and travelers passing through the city.

In April 1975 The Char moved to its current location on Dry Hill Road in a beautiful building featuring fieldstone accents and large windows overlooking a peaceful pond. Billy and his wife Patty, along with Ann and her husband Wally, continued to consistently provide their loyal customers with exceptional quality food and service for the next 30 years.  The Char is fortunate to have staff with over 150 combined years of service. It’s this consistency of quality, familiarity, and great service that maintains local customers and friends from far and wide, coming back week after week, year after year.

Today Brian and Donna Williams continue the tradition of excellent food and service that Ann and Billy started over 40 years ago. With an extensive renovation completed in early 2005 and a newly expanded wine list featuring over 60 quality wines, The Char offers an updated setting but the same menu and excellent service that has delighted our customers for the past 40 years.
